Free Pincushion Printable: Red, White and Blue-tiful
If you have been with us for a while, you'll remember an earlier Button Lover's Club that included a small card featuring the hand-lettered art of Tammy Tutterow. One of our favorites from the series, Red, White and Blue-tiful was--and still is-- a perfect tribute to the month of July. Now this blast from the past is reimagined as a pincushion!
With a printable fabric sheet, we transferred the Red, White and Blue-tiful art, then used it to create a fun and colorful pincushion. The link below will allow you to download the image to print at home. The pincushion-finish is incredibly quick and easy!
Supplies:
- Red, White and Blue-tiful Printable (Click the link to download free. When a new window opens, right click and save to your computer)
- June Tailor Colorfast Sew-In Fabric Sheets for Ink Jet Printers
- Wool or fabric piece 5 3/4" x 4 1/2" for pincushion back
- Wool Roving
- Handmade buttons and/or Pin-Mini to embellish (We used jpm428 Star Spangled)
Instructions:
Begin by printing the image on a printable fabric sheet. Follow the manufacturer's directions included in the package. Look for the printable fabric sheets at your favorite local or online fabric store.
The printed image should measure about 5 1/4" x 4".
Trim the printed fabric along the edges of the image. Most printers offer the option to print trim marks at the corners of an image. Since this image has a light background, you may find trim marks helpful in deciding where to cut.
Cut a piece of fabric or wool 5 3/4" x 4 1/2" for the back of your pincushion. It should be about 1/4" larger than the printed image on each side.
Place the printed fabric piece on the center of the pincushion backing. Pin the two layers together. Machine stitch around the printed fabric 1/4" from the edge.
Optional: Trim the backing fabric with pinking shears to add a decorative edge.
Follow the Frankenstitch Finish tutorial for filling and finishing the pincushion.
Embellish your fun summer pincushion with Just Another Button Company handmade and hand-dyed buttons or a trio of Just Pins (or maybe both!). Click HERE for buttons tagged for 4th of July.
