How To Copy A Pattern For Wool Appliqué

March 30, 2018

There are so many different ways and types of projects to use our handmade clay buttons and pins. One of our favorites is wool appliqué pincushions. If you are new to wool appliqué, you may not know where to start. We make that easy by offering several different project kits and printable patterns that include step-by-step instructions.  Over the next several weeks, we would like to share some of our favorite tips for wool appliqué. With these tips you will be stitching wool appliqué pincushions like a pro!

The first tip today is all about how to copy the pattern design to use on wool. Since wool is thick, you can’t trace your pattern directly onto it.  It can also be inconvenient to pin paper patterns to, especially when pattern pieces are small.  Thanks to a supply you may already have in your kitchen, copying the pattern pieces is super easy!

Cut a piece of freezer paper the size of your pattern. Place the freezer paper shiny side down. Use a pencil to trace the pattern onto the freezer paper. The freezer paper is translucent enough that you should be able to see the pattern outline without the help of a lightbox.

Cut the pattern pieces out leaving a bit of extra space around each one.

Place the pattern piece onto the wool shiny side down. Iron the pattern piece with a dry iron on the wool setting. The heat will temporarily bond the freezer paper onto the wool.

Cut out the piece along the pencil line. Peel the pattern piece off the wool.  It is that simple!

Place your pieces on your base fabric, stitch, and finish according to your pattern directions.

We may be partial, but think the fun step comes next… adding the fun touches like handmade buttons…

and handmade pins! After all, what is a cute pincushion without cute pins?
