Beachy Christmas Ornament Project Tips
The JABC Seaside Shop is well stocked with ocean-theme buttons and pins--plus patterns and even some limited-edition kits!
Some stitchers prefer cross stitch and some would rather sew, but did you know our projects are designed to be achievable by everyone? We tend to use felted wool for pincushions and love perforated paper for cross stitch. Both materials are easy to use for all skill levels. Keep reading to see how you can create--and finish--our NeedlePrint perforated paper kits into these beautiful ornaments.
The new Beachy Christmas Ornaments begin with 18ct perforated paper. We print ocean waves behind a pine swag with JOY or NOEL. You cross stitch the poinsettia and pinecones. Each kit includes perforated paper, a cardstock back image, buttons and a stitch chart. Even the finish is simple: sew on the buttons, faux hem the edges and add a felt back (not included in the kit).
Here's a close up of the faux hemmed edge we describe in detail in a previous blog.
While the felt is not included in the ornament kit, you can find a free pattern for cutting a 4" scalloped square here on our website. We cut the shape from teal wool felt to back each ornament.
Top each ornament with a ribbon loop and small bow. Here's an easy way to make a small bow with double loops. Our ribbon is 3/8" wide with wired edges. Cut 5” of ribbon and set aside. Fold 18" of ribbon like the illustration and pinch at the arrows. Tie the 5” piece very tightly at the pinched spot. Fluff the bow and clip the ribbon ends diagonally.
Even if you don't usually cross stitch, we think you'll enjoy how quickly these NeedlePrint ornaments are complete in just a couple of hours.
Merry Beach Christmas (just a little bit early)!

How do you make the felted back? I used wonder under to trace the pattern and then put on the wool. But now realize I have the adhesive side exposed on the back. What did you use? Thanks!

Rachel Kelley, for the next project you might want to use freezer paper to trace the pattern as it peels off easily after you’ve cut your wool. For now, you could fuse a square of similar colored fabric to the back, then cut around the shape. That will give a nice finish to the back of your ornament.
